Company Profile - Gallatin Steel
Gallatin Steel, of Ghent, Kentucky, is one of the most advanced, environmentally-safe minimills in the world, manufacturing more than 1.2 million tons of hot rolled coils annually.
Gallatin Steel recycles scrap steel to make new hot-rolled steel coils, using a continuous Compact Strip Production process. Each day, 4,000 tons of scrap steel from junked automobiles, demolished building and bridges, railroad wheels and appliances is turned into new steel, producing over 1.2 million tons of hot rolled coils annually.
Situation
Gallatin first implemented Canary Trending in 1997 in one area of the plant. Since this initial rollout, implemented in many areas, with extensive usage in the caster and the melt shop. Canary Trending is used by control room operators to monitor and control their processes, by the engineers for trouble shooting and improving production efficiencies and by the managers to see the big picture of operations.
Outcome
Gallatin control room operators, engineers, and management can access real-time and historical data from anywhere in the facility. With the improved visibility into the operations, Gallatin has estimated Canary Labs saves the organization $1 Million annually in avoided downtime costs.
