Company Profile - Kinder Morgan
Kinder Morgan is the largest independent owner/operator of product pipelines in the U.S., with more than 10,000 miles of pipelines and associated terminals. These pipelines transport more than two million barrels per day of gasoline, jet fuel, diesel fuel and natural gas liquids.
Situation
Kinder Morgan Pacific Liquids Pipeline Operations unit which operates a 3,000-mile refined petroleum products pipeline on the West Coast; serving Arizona, California, Nevada, New Mexico, Oregon, and Texas need the ability to pull data from over 27 remote locations and consolidate the information into 2 central data centers. Additional requirements based on Kinder Morgan's environment; limited bandwidth, so any file transfer must not impact on-going operations; all regulatory data needed to be collected in 2 redundant historians; trend data must be accessible from any location; solution must not require training; and a turnkey solution.
Outcome
Canary Labs Engineers worked with Kinder Morgan, in deploying over 54 Trend Historians along with Trend Link / Trend Web standard products, and developed a new tool, The DataSet Synchronizer. This solution exceeded all of Kinder Morgan's requirements, synchronizing data across all 54 historians with complete control over the transfer speed ensuring zero impact to on-going operations. Canary Labs worked with the primary end users to configure simple and easy-to-use views consisting of site/pipeline location drop-down lists; primary or backup servers or datasets; date & time to display; time duration of the chart; and chart size.
The result, Kinder Morgan now has centralized historian data for regulatory inspections, with a system that is easy to use, maintain, network friendly and reliable. This has saved Kinder Morgan from having to invest in networks, hardware and reduced the need for remote resources to manage the pumping locations.
