Canary Web Service

The Canary Web Service is a web service that provides Canary Enterprise Historian data to client programs capable of calling web services. Utilizing web service technology allows easy access of data from remote locations and through network firewalls. Clients can use the standard WSDL (Web Service Description Language) for the Canary Web Service which makes it easy to interface other systems and platforms to the data. Web services standardize the process of remotely connecting to data over the internet.

What are Web Services?

Web services is a technology for deploying, and providing access to, business functions over the World Wide Web. Web services make it possible for applications to be integrated more rapidly, easily, and cheaply than ever before.

Web services can help your business by:

  • Reducing the cost of doing business
  • Making it possible to deploy solutions more rapidly
  • Opening up new opportunities

Web services refer to a set of programming standards used to make different types of software talk to each other over the Internet, without human intervention. The key to achieving all these things is a common program-to-program communication model, built on existing and emerging standards such as HTTP, XML, SOAP, and WSDL.

Applications

One application is to use the Canary Web Service to dynamically get data that will be shown in a web page. In this application, an Apache Web Server can use PHP to call the Canary Web Service functions to get data. This data is then embedded into a web page that is displayed on a user's web browser. On an Microsoft IIS server, you can use ASP.NET's web service support to call the Canary Web Service.

Many application programming languages have support for calling web services. This gives easy access to data to other applications that are written in different programming languages or are running on different platforms.

Most enterprise applications now have the ability to call web services to import data. This allows Canary Historian data to be transferred to other business applications.
